Sophie Molineux Returns to Australian Squad Ahead of World Cup

Canberra: The long-awaited return of spinner Sophie Molineux to the Australian women’s cricket squad has presented team management with tough selection choices ahead of the World Cup. According to cricket websites, head coach Shelley Nitschke stated that due to an abundance of talented players, making final eleven selections will require some hard decisions.
  • Warm-up Match and Recovery: Australia suffered a 4-wicket defeat against England in a pre-World Cup warm-up match, though Nitschke downplayed the loss, noting the team tested an experimental batting order. Molineux completed a lengthy rehabilitation following knee surgery last year, taking 1 wicket and scoring 5 runs off 10 balls against England.
  • Selection Dilemmas: Captain Alyssa Healy previously hinted that a fully fit Molineux would be a top priority. Nitschke noted that including Molineux means management will have to drop one of two leg-spinners, Georgia Wareham or Alana King. Meanwhile, decisions in the fast-bowling department are also tough, as Darcie Brown has made an impressive return from a back injury while Megan Schutt and Kim Garth remain primary choices.
  • Batting Depth and Preparation: Young batter Georgia Voll, boasting an average of 63.50, is potentially left out of the squad, while Heather Graham—who replaced Grace Harris—did not bat or bowl against England. Nitschke acknowledged the batting lineup struggled against English leg-spinner Sarah Glenn, attributing it to shot selection rather than a flaw in the team’s aggressive approach.
  • World Cup Outlook: Nitschke highlighted that the series against India served as excellent preparation, giving the team useful experience in varied conditions as they prepare fully for the tournament. Australia will play their opening World Cup match against New Zealand this coming Wednesday.
