Australia announced on Monday that a woman will lead its army for the first time in history—part of a leadership transition in the country’s defense force.
The government said in a statement that Lieutenant General Susan Coyle, the current Chief of Joint Capabilities, will become Army Chief in July, succeeding Lieutenant General Simon Stuart.
According to news agency Reuters, General Susan Coyle’s appointment as Army Chief comes at a time when the Australian military is trying to increase the number of female officers in its ranks. The Australian army has faced a wave of allegations of sexual harassment and discrimination within the system.
